Telling Our Story: Economic Impact Data and the Attack on Meetings

The attack on meetings and events has been fuelled in part by a poor understanding of the incredible economic value our industry delivers—to the organizations that host face-to-face gatherings, and to the communities that welcome them. MPI made a groundbreaking contribution to the knowledge base on economic impact in 2008, with the release of a comprehensive study funded by MPI Foundation Canada.  The study found that more than 70 million participants attended 671,000 meetings in Canada in 2006.  They generated $32 billion in direct spending, $71 billion in economic effects, 235,500 full-year jobs, and $14.6 billion in revenue to all levels of government.

The Canadian study was the first to use a new UN World Tourism Organization method for measuring economic impact, and equivalent studies for the U.S. and Europe are not yet complete. But meeting professionals everywhere can still use the Canadian research as a starting point for telling the industry’s story, demonstrating its value, and making the case that an economic crisis is the worst time to be cutting back on face-to-face meetings.
