As we all get older, the concept of spring break stops
meaning fun times in the sun and becomes about the decreased traffic on the
drive into work (celebrated by many a person here at headquarters!). A friend of mine who is a graduate
student recently said on his Facebook profile “spring break is
essentially week of no classes so you can focus on your research projects.”
Reading that was a reminder of all the hard work that professionals put into
continued education in their undergraduate and post-graduate years.
The MPI student community is active in their local
universities and the local business area. We have featured
their efforts before, like the Central Michigan University group that got a
behind the scenes look at the cruise line hospitality industry. Through
connections made, the same students will
work with the Boston Marathon next month and with Cannes Film Festival in
May.
The process to success begins through work like theirs,
building the connections and skills that eventually lead to honors like the
recent induction of Oklahoma Restaurant Association director Patti Colley into
the Oklahoma State University School of Hotel and Restaurant Administration
hall of fame. Colley helped to create the first MPI student chapter on campus,
and is still involved with the currently enrolled body. The kind of dedication
she and others give resonates in the event industry and is invaluable to those
just starting out.
Upcoming opportunities for MPI students include the Future
Leaders Forum at WEC 2011
in Orlando, July 23 – 26. This will be a prime opportunity to connect with your
peers, both students and full-time professionals. If assistance is needed, find
out if you qualify for the IMEX scholarship.
Applications for the scholarship are due April 26, so be sure to fill out the
necessary paperwork soon. Attending WEC will provide you with the education and
contacts that kick your career into overdrive and set you up for success. Good
luck to all applicants!
