What is Social Media?

Social media is content created by people who want to form communities around shared interests. It is a medium where people can constantly shift between the role of audience and author –communicating through various online publishing technologies. It is a new way for people to discover, read and share news, information and content. Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal and business.

It is important for MPI to be a part of social media for a many reasons. MPI needs advocates to spread the word. Social media provides recommendations, shareability, real time feedback, and helps MPI to be consistent and constant in our members' lives.

Mission: Convene supporters in an open forum without controls.

Twitter Twitter | Create a New Account

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.

Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, SMS, RSS, or through applications.

So what is a hashtag?
According to Twitter, “hashtags are a community-driven convention for adding additional context and metadata to your tweets. They're like tags on Flickr, only added inline to your post. You create a hashtag simply by prefixing a word with a hash symbol: #hashtag. Hashtags were developed as a means to create "groupings" on Twitter, without having to change the basic service.

MPI General Hashtags:
#MPI - Everything MPI.
#MPI_Chapter - Chapter related conversations.
#MPIF - MPI Foundation specific discussions.

Current MPI Event Hashtags:

#MD10 - MeetDifferent
#WEC10 - World Education Congress
#EMEC09 - European Meetings & Event Conference

Relevant industry hashtags:

#assnchat – all things related to association marketing and operations
#eventprofs – all things relating to event professionals

Facebook Isn't Just for Kids Anymore

Over the past six months, the largest growing demographic of Facebook users has been 35-54 year olds, with a 276.4% growth rate. Not far behind was the 55 and over demographic with a 194.3% growth rate. This is only slightly behind the growth rate of the largest group of Facebook users: the college crowd of 18-24 year olds. Blogs MPI Blogs

A blog is a type of website, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order. Blog can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.

In MPI’s case, blogs are just another channel of communication and interaction we hope to offer our members. MPI's official blog, Engage, is the place for industry trends, association insights and a platform for member engagement.

ONE+, MPI’s award-winning industry publication, also has a place on the web. You can find the editors’ favorite industry trends, polls and news that doesn’t quite make the monthly issue on the ONE+ blog, PlusPoint.

Community and personal blogs from members and industry professionals can be included here as well to provide exposure to topics and discussions that are important to you.
