Frequently Asked Questions
Am I able to work while onsite at the CMM program for CMM?
It is not recommended and would be highly difficult. The CMM program is an intense learning environment and the more attendees put into it, the more they benefit from it.
Can I bring a guest to the CMM program?
No, it is not recommended. The CMM program is a very intense learning experience. During the day, you will be attending sessions and most evenings you will spend working on a case study team project. There is no time or opportunity scheduled for involving family members or guests in the program. You will have very little "free" time.
Do I have to have a CMP prior to a CMM?
While it is not a requirement, the CMM program is not for someone new to the industry. The application process determines readiness and eliminates those not qualified. If someone were new to the industry, a logical path would be to obtain the CMP certification prior to the CMM, but it is not required.
Do I have to recertify for the CMM?
No. The CMM program is a learning experience and you receive a certificate if you obtain your CMM.
How do I obtain a CMM?
You must first apply and be accepted to the program. You then must attend a 5 1/2 day CMM program and successfully complete an online exam and business plan project.
How do I obtain a CMP?
Contact the Convention Industry Council (CIC) for information at www.conventionindustry.org.
How long does the CMM application process take?
After you have completed the application, you will receive a decision within 10 business days.
How many people attend each CMM program?
Each program is limited to 56 participants. This ensures maximum interaction among the participants and faculty and enhances the learning and networking opportunities.
How much is the application fee for CMM?
US$75.00 for members and US$125.00 for non- members. Both are non-refundable.
How much is the registration fee for CMM?
The "registration fee" is paid registering you for a specific date when the CMM is being offered and is 1,800.00 euro for MPI members and 2,200.00 euro for non members. After a certain date, the registration fee is not refundable.
Once I am accepted as a candidate for the CMM, how long is that acceptance valid?
An accepted CMM application is valid for two years.
What are the requirements to be accepted into the CMM program?
The ideal candidate meets the following criteria:
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in the industry.
- Expertise in all aspects of meeting management including, but not limited to management of logistics, management of budget, management of people, experience with legal/contracts, and management experience with marketing and communications.
- Consistent history of professional continuing education.
- In addition, the information provided on the application about a candidate’s additional or exceptional qualifications is factored into the decision.
What is on the exam for the CMM, is there a study guide?
The CMM exam is an essay exam based on the material presented at the 5 1/2 day program. The exam does not look for memorization of definitions or formulas, but seeks to test your ability to apply new knowledge and skills to your own reality. Attendees take the exam online within one week following the program.
What is the difference between CMM & CMP?
The Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation is more tactically focused, designed for someone with three to five years of industry experience and teaches you how to be a meeting planner. The CMM is more strategic in focus and is for someone with more than 10 years of industry experience. The CMP is like a bachelor's degree while a CMM is like a master's.
Will I need a laptop for the CMM program?
No, this is not a requirement.
