The Event Design Certificate course offered by Event Model Generation and supported by San Diego State University and Meeting Professionals International is a three day program that will help meeting professionals design better events and create value for stakeholders.

Program participants will learn critical skills that will enable them to design events based on stakeholder needs and then prototype event designs using the #EventCanvas, a strategic management template for developing new or documenting existing events and conference models.

Participation in the Event Design Certificate program will enable you to effectively utilize the #EventCanvas. You can develop new and/or document existing events and conference models, via a visual chart with elements describing an event's promise, how it helps stakeholders to get their jobs done, resolving pains and creating gains within a set framework of commitment and expected return. The canvas articulates how the behavior changes as a result of having participated in the event as well as stating the required levels of satisfaction against expectations. Additionally, the canvas outlines the costs and expected revenues in relation to the customer journey (service design) and the instructional design of an event.

The #EventCanvas training has been accredited by the Convention Industry Council (CIC) under section Domain G: Meeting or Event Design and is eligible for 25 Clock Hours. You will learn via three levels of mastery that correspond to the Meeting and Business Event Competency Standards (MBECS) Curriculum Guide. This guide is industry endorsed and provides descriptions of the knowledge and abilities meeting professionals need in order to be successful.

During the three days of training, you will cover the following “progressive levels” which correspond to three levels of workplace responsibility (coordinate, manage and direct).

Level 1
Coordinate - Application of #EventCanvas Basics

#EventCanvas Basic skill set and awareness - Stakeholder awareness, analysis and behavior mapping (Empathy Maps) and basic application of the #EventCanvas to articulate how the event can change behavior of the stakeholders. Basic skills include ability to interpret and create an Event Canvas Boundary box and discuss stakeholder needs.

Level 2
Manage Event Design using the #EventCanvas

Familiarity with the #EventCanvas as a User Interface - Prototyping and application of the canvas to discuss, prototype and make informed decisions using the Event Canvas as a compass for the team to create impactful events with informed team members having used the process previously. Application of the Event Simulator, a toolkit with facilitation cards to enable team collaboration on creating events using the #EventCanvas.

Level 3
Direct Event Design & Facilitation of a team through the #EventCanvas process
Application of the #EventCanvas as an Experience Interface - Prototyping and application of the canvas to facilitate a team alignment, discussion, prototyping and decision making using the #EventCanvas as a compass for the team to create impactful events. You’ll learn to guide a team through the process, articulate jobs to be done into actionable objectives per participant for event ROI measurement post event; guide a team through the process and lead the way to a successful design.

San Diego State University
The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is tailored to meet both industry needs and student expectations. Our robust curriculum, both practical and visionary, ensures students graduate with a strong business foundation and a real understanding of industry complexities and demands. But a degree from the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is only one aspect of a student’s education. A strong leadership and business foundation is essential, but of equal importance is the extracurricular and experiential learning that goes with it.
