“Jay Smethurst’s conceptual illustrations were the driving inspiration for November’s “The Visualizer” layout. Since the article was all about him and his illustration craft, I felt it best to honor that and do most of the design elements by hand. Drawing lots (LOTS) of comics as a kid, mostly in history class, made this a pretty easy execution. Who knew that would one day help me bag a National Design Award? Eat it, Coach Tucker.”
