    Don't Talk to Audiences, Talk With Them

    Event content will change dramatically in terms of cost, structure and purpose in the future. But how, and in what ways? To find out, MPI asked 27 experts outside the event industry what forces would change meetings in the future. Here are their key trends.

    • New monetization models (such as freemium) will make context and connections onsite even more important. Just like games, imagine free conferences, where delegates pay per session/event—and those sessions better be worth it, or people won't go.
    • Just delivering content won’t be enough for us; our meetings will need to inspire and guide.
    • We'll often share content before our meetings, so that delegates can come prepared to brainstorm and learn from their peers.
    • Younger generations are less interested in lectures and more interested in having questions addressed.
    • We'll struggle with presenter selection as the number of influential voices increases.
    • Ultimately, delegates won't want knowledge, they'll want know-how.

    From the Outside In: Meeting Content

    The following entry was written by Jackie Mulligan, a principal lecturer at Leeds Metropolitan University, which is conducting our future of meetings research.

    My early career involved producing lots of things. I printed things, produced conference bags and goody bags filled with more things. I booked musicians who often wanted to sell their CD things. Further back in time, when I first started studying, I used to go to a library that was filled with books. I also bought lots of them and had to buy lots of mismatching shelving units to house them all. Whenever I moved, I gathered all my things together and all of my things came with me—in bag loads (as a student) and in lorry loads (as an adult). 

    The students I teach now have less things than I ever had at their age. They have de-cluttered. They travel light. As I look around now—the library I use is online, my music collection is on my phone, my film collection is on my computer. It seems I have de-cluttered my life, too. Have you?

    In the future, the world around us is digitized. Our books, music, films, friends, networks, education…Online media continues to present challenges to all industries that create content. The "From the Outside In: Meeting Content" supplement highlights that the meeting industry is not immune.

    That is why stepping outside the industry to gain new perspectives is a good approach for aiding future, as well as innovative, thinking. After all, are there lessons you can learn from the industries that are surviving the digital revolutions? Experts like Nicholas Lovell believe that the digitized formats necessitate very different approaches. He uses examples from the video games industry freemium models.   

    “Freemium games may be the only sustainable model,” Lovell said. 

    The average value of a single freemium transaction (on iOS and Android) is US$14, according to recent research by Flurry Analytics. Half (51 percent) of “smart” games revenue comes from transactions valued at $20 or more, and a full 30 percent come from transactions valued at $50 or more. Hence, the mission isn’t to make small amounts from many, but to make nothing from many and lots from a few.

    So freemium models provide one approach, price difference based on perceived value. However, what about the threat of online to offline events—are you worried about the impact on face-to-face meetings? Some of the most lively discussions in the Future of Meetings LinkedIn group have centered on and around this topic: Is online a threat or an opportunity? Maybe it is time for you to join the conversation?

Some of the takeaways may be daring stuff for many meeting planners, speakers and facilitators but could well be worth the risk.     Measurement Toolbox Resources, Now At Your Fingertips

    We've reached the next step in the Business Value of Meetings research initiative, known as BVOM. Just last week, during EIBTM in Barcelona, we introduced the BVOM toolbox to the industry and we’re excited about the reception so far!

    The toolbox is a collection of resources findings that are intended to help professionals overcome the five barriers to measurement and reporting implementation. The five initial whitepapers serve as the foundation for the toolbox, which is an ever-growing resource for planners and suppliers. Each piece is dynamic and delivers key takeaways that guide BVOM practices.

    MPI will continue adding toolbox pieces, such as instructional videos, glossaries, case studies and more, beginning this month. Members will have unlimited access to each tool as part of their investment with MPI; non-members professionals are able to purchase.

    Mobile connection is so ubiquitous and expected that I often give the “RCA dog head tilt” to my phone when it doesn’t upload information as fast as I think it should. I’m trying to work here!

    WEC Daily Download Details

    As Theresa said in her post “With the Attendee in Mind,” one of the focuses of the re-designed WEC experience is including our community in the process of developing the content that is presented at conference. Daily Download, a new addition to WEC, will take the insights and opinions of attendees that are shared online throughout the day and filter into one session onsite. The event design team is using Wiffiti, a service of Locamoda, to crowd-source the social media stream from Foursquare, twitter and Flickr, as well as mobile and web messages, and present it to Daily Download attendees. To make it easier for professionals to contribute to the discussion, the following hashtags have been specially created. We encourage attendees to tag their photos and tweets from pre-conference events, education sessions on Sunday through Tuesday and the Flash Point presentations with these hashtags:

    You Helped Us Be Our Best

    I realize the past couple of days have been a little slow here on the ol' blog. Our excuse: We're working hard on finishing up the July print edition.

    Speaking of the magazine, I hope you don't mind a little tooting of our own horn. Last week, the publications staff was awarded seven EXCEL Awards, given out by Association Media and Publishing. The awards were

    SXSWi: I am a Patient Boy

    One thing you should know about SXSWi is that there's a lot of waiting around. People wait to get into sessions, to see celebrity appearances, and of course, for coffee. I know I've mentioned this before, but it still amazes me that people have such patience. Maybe I'm amazed because I rarely display such patience.

    What's in store for the future in publishing and content strategy is a waiting game, too. That's not to say people don't make plans, but over and over I've been in core conversations where more than once attendees have said phrases such as, "We don't know exactly what's going to happen. We're just going to keep doing what we do and wait it out." 

    Core conversations here are more about asking questions than definitive answers. Concerning content strategy, though, the important thing is value, that strategy should show how valuable an organization's business assets are. 

    Christopher "moot" Poole, founder of 4chan.org, talked about content yesterday. He said that the primary reason 4chan is so popular is because it values content over creator, that people are judged by what they create rather than who they are. 

    That philosophy falls in line with another point made at a session, in that there needs to be a less hierarchic system in content strategy. There, in fact, need to be communities and teams working together across the company. That way, it's not one person shouldering the blame or praise; it's a group effort. 

    Now, I'm off to get in another line for another session.

    Top Takeaways: EMEC 2011

    After reading the glowing tweets and the conversations from the on-the-ground MPI staff, it is looking like EMEC 2011 has been the best so far for stimulating some fantastic dialogue around our industry, the future and where those two meet. I’ve gathered some of the highlights so far, and I know post-conference energy next will bring additional insights. If you had an experience you want to share, do so in the comments or by mentioning us (@MPI) online.

    1. Attendance is already significantly past 2010 levels. Professionals were looking to gather and collaborate, and boy did they.
    2. The Mayor of Düsseldorf welcomed the conference, which was well received a powerful sign of support from the local community.
    3.  Planning for EMEC 2012 is in full swing. European chapter leaders are giving valuable input based on recommendations from the advisory council. Site selection and format are now being decided.
    4. Flash Point, a session format first for EMEC, was a resounding success, with positive feedback from scores of delegates.
    5. Solution Rooms generated excitement from all who participated, including a round of applause. The ability to collaborate with peers and get advice from all was a draw for many.
    6. The Future of Meetings session packed the house, as European professionals sought to share their opinions on what’s to come for the industry.
    7. Press involved in the media fam were treated to behind-the-scenes access, as well as site visits that included some of the most popular areas of Düsseldorf. (Part 1, Part 2)
    8. The unique CSR projects got even Bruce MacMillan involved, painting with the Foundation for Hospital Art project. The canvases were then delivered to the area hospital as a gift to the organization’s leaders. The Wfaa Toy Project and Help and Hope Foundation projects also received attention from the attendees.
    9. The FutureWatch session and the SAP Hybrid Event session were both popular with delegates, giving them a view of the future and meeting technology.
    10. Last, and certainly not least, the number of European members continues to rise! The Italia chapter celebrated their 20 year anniversary and the Norway chapter 10 years. We continue to meet and celebrate the strength of community and our industry.

    Simon Bucknall: Inspiration From Within at EMEC 2011

    Maybe it was his accent. Or maybe it was his confidence. After speaking with Simon Bucknall about his upcoming session at EMEC, “The Inspiration Masterclass – Become a Practical, Powerful, Inspiring Leader,” I’m inspired to tell you that for those attending EMEC next week, you need to be to be in his session on Monday. Simon is giving attendees a three-step process for getting the most impact out of their presentations given to any audience, whether at the annual conferences or inthe boardroom.
