    Best Jobs for Working Moms

CareerBliss announces new data revealing what job types may be best for women when it comes to balancing work and life. Sadly, meeting planning didn't make the list.

CareerBliss evaluated more than one million data points and derived information from 60,000 female employee reviews to understand what job types ranked highest in the area of work-life balance. After assessing the reviews, CareerBliss found that jobs which allowed for a flexible schedule and the option to work from home garnered some of the highest ratings for work happiness in female employees.

Ranking first overall are jobs in the pharmaceutical industry. Jobs reviewed in this area were primarily women in sales positions who had more flexibility with their schedule.

Ranking just below pharmaceutical job types are biotech jobs, which include engineers, researchers and area sales managers. Ranking third—administrative or clerical jobs—women in this job type say that the senior management who supported their family life was a large factor in their overall ranking of their company.

“We analyze what makes employees happy and delve into the factors which impact all groups of workers," sai Heidi Golledge, CEO and co-founder of CareerBliss. "This latest data is unique and important in understanding what drives work happiness for working mothers. We have learned the factors which weigh heavily for female employees include growth opportunity and most importantly work-life balance—as seen by our latest results.”

A consistent theme throughout many of the reviews was the importance of flexibility—having a company that enables employees to work a typical schedule, but have the option of flexible hours to provide for things such as doctor appointments, childcare and other family needs.

Women Happier at Work Than Men

New research shows that women are happier at work than men. The information is based on more than a year of research and analysis from more than 200,000 company reviews and reveals that overall women outrank men in all factors of career happiness, specifically in areas concerning work-life balance, flexibility with their work schedule, career advancement and job security.

CareerBliss—an online career community—analyzed more than 1,600,000 data points from employees evaluating the eight factors that affect work happiness: growth opportunities, compensation, benefits, work-life balance, career advancement, senior management, job security and whether the employee would recommend the company to others. The data revealed not only did women rank higher in career happiness than men overall, but on each of the eight factors that impact job satisfaction.

In addition to their overall career happiness score, CareerBliss also broke out men and women’s happiness scores by city and evaluated if compensation played a factor in overall job satisfaction. The data indicates that money does not necessarily have an effect on career happiness. For example, although the data shows women in San Francisco make significantly less than men at US$64,000 year versus $86,000 a year, their happiness ranking is higher. This trend was similar in the following cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Miami, Pittsburgh and Houston.

“This data is consistent with our research revealing that the true driver of career happiness is not salary, but factors like job security, a person’s ability to balance work and home and the camaraderie they share with co-workers," said Matt Miller, CareerBliss co-founder and chief technology officer.
