    Why Surveys Matter

If you were to look at any organization’s DNA, you’d see that surveys at its foundation. While not the sole driver of life, surveys are a strong part of an organization’s success and push for progress.

“Surveys are important to MPI (and associations in general) as they are a good way to learn from our membership in order help us improve,” said Marj Atkinson, MLS, CRP, MPI’s manager of research. “MPI’s goal is to serve our members—and if something needs improvement or if is going well, we need to hear about it.”

A membership satisfaction survey is just one way to accomplish this, she says.

“We conduct surveys to gain feedback on what members need, such as educational content, opinions on our live events and how well they like some of the services we provide,” she said. “Online surveys are a relatively quick way to get a pulse on our membership.”

MPI recently sent out our annual membership survey, and we encourage everyone to complete it. By participating, you’ll personally be entered in a drawing to receive a free one-year membership extension.

Let us help you become successful. That’s what we’re here to do.

“Hearing from our members has allowed some significant adjustments in the past,” said Randy Crabtree, MPI’s membership marketing manager. “It represents a key listening tool for us to ensure we are delivering value to the MPI community.”

Remember, the survey only takes a few minutes to complete; however it will provide MPI with a great deal of valuable feedback that will last a long time.

    Value to the max

I was on the phone with a member the other day discussing ways they could get the most out of their MPI membership. Then I started thinking, it is important to continue the conversation with the member community on how to best utilize all the resources that come with being a member of MPI. Not only that, we continue to add new resources all the time. So the member resources conversation, based on why one joined MPI, is always changing.

I thought I’d take advantage of this platform to share my thoughts on the latest and greatest on how members can make the most of their MPI investment.

Here are some valuable resources available with MPI membership:

    • My MPI” has just been added to the www.mpiweb.org website. This is an online resource to connect, share and discuss.  This is where the exchange of ideas, documents and easy access to professional peers all come together in a private setting created just for MPI members.
    • MPI has also recently made visual enhancements to www.mpiweb.org, making it easier to connect to content, people and resources.
    • Career Connections by MPI gives members an exclusive 15-day advance peek at new industry jobs. Plus, members always save by being able to post their open positions for free—a $225 savings, in fact.
    • Online education is available 24/7/365 on your desktop or your mobile devices through MPI’s Professional Development On Demand, with over 200 CIC-IS approved contact hours that are CMP qualified and available free for MPI members.
    • MPI Foundation’s Thought Leadership program delivers cutting-edge industry knowledge that keeps members ahead of their game in a fast paced industry whirling with change.
    • Sustainable Event Measurement Tool and CultureActive© tool on www.mpiweb.org provide assistance to members so they can meet the challenges of going Green and doing business internationally.
    • MPI’s award-winning One+ magazine gives members industry news and opinions they need to be on top of their profession.
    • MPI’s annual World Education Congress connects members to relationships, knowledge and ideas that elevate their performance. From the hosted-buyer program to Market Square, MPI is bringing new ways for planners and suppliers to connect.
    • MPI’s Chapters now have access to an educational database that lets them deliver locally proprietary education created to meet the specific needs of MPI members.

These are just a few of the ways to maximize the value of MPI membership. But truly, you get out of an MPI membership what you personally put into it. While the resources above all come with the membership the moment you write the check, the real value awaits until you to jump in and get involved. Go to meetings. Make personal connections that develop into long-term relationships. Join a committee. Vow that at each MPI event you meet someone you do not know.

The value of MPI is expressed in the personal stories of MPI members across its 40-year history. There is now a special place where they are kept. Visit www.mpiweb.org/stories to learn more. If you are a member, share your story too. If you are not a member of MPI, join and start your story today.

Please look back to here from time to time as I continue the conversation on maximizing your MPI return on investment.

Randy's Corner: Advice for MPI Students

I always like to hark back to the halcyon days of my undergraduate years…ahh, so much Ramen noodles. My budget definitely didn’t look like I wanted it to, and in hindsight, had I looked up a professional organization, I’d want one like MPI in my post-graduation time of transition.

Graduation is one of the most exciting times, mostly because you’ve already auctioned off your books to pay for a summer vacation. Now that next phase is easier due to the MPI Student-in-Transition program, which allows your dues to grow incrementally, as your salary will be doing, to full membership.

While I could type out an entire entry about the Student-in-Transition program, and the additional value in association with MPI beyond your school years, I’ll let membership Marketing Manager Randy Crabtree explain it to you. Take it away Randy!

    What Success Feels Like

I've blogged about my experiences with the exceptionally hospitable people of the Duesseldorf Congress Centre and the city during the press tour of our European Meetings & Events Conference, but  when it comes to telling the story of why this year was so successful and different no one can say it better than our delegates.  And they are saying it.  Survey results indicate 98% of delegates were satisfied with this year's conference and we saw significant gains in content satisfaction, moving above 92%.

But let's face it, numbers are numbers and the delegates themselves and images from the experiences tell the story more sincerely.  So here are some excerpts I'd like to share that our team has recently received.

"I have not attended this meeting in 5 years and wasn’t sure what to expect but I was blown away with the top notch education, the quality of the participants and the wonderful networking events we were hosted to over the 3 days. I thoroughly enjoyed the education content and the great conversations that generated as a result, both in the sessions and outside them." - Claire Smith, VP Vancouver Convention Center

"I would like to take the opportunity to thank the EMEC organization team. I have really enjoyed and already executed many changes in my center as result of the EMEC conference. I caught the message that we need to run more green meeting if we want to support sustainabililty." - Susana Carricando, CMM, MDIC

"Thank you for a very interesting EMEC! I enjoyed participating and got a similar reaction from most of the connections I made. I enjoyed the opening session, the flash point and the individual sessions. Most of it is reflected in the survey I completed. Thank you also for the sponsorship opportunity. We were honored to sponsor one of the sessions..." - Alda Egurrola-Wienke, Regional Director Elite Meetings International

"After all the hype of EMEC, my MPI friends and peers just said 'you have to go.'  Thanks to the MPI foundation I did, and I got to experience first hand what EMEC was.  Honestly I can say it was a fantastic, enjoyable and fun event.  The educational content, the learning environment were all of high quality, the networking second to none.  And you felt at home with your MPI peers and friends.  And thanks again to the MPI Foundation that made it feasible for me to be there, I will certainly make the effort to go again, and I would recommend it anyone." - Charles Perkin, Events Manager, CIRIA

"[The Solution Room] best session of the conference, bar none. Inspiring peer-to-peer solution findings" - Miguel Neves, CDMP with Synaxis Meetings & Events.

I think I honestly speak for all of Team MPI that these are the kinds of remarks that make our day or month or even our year.  Knowing that the hard work put in for years and months is delivering what our members actually need is incredibly fulfilling. So we offer a thanks to all the sponsors, investors, speakers, collaborators and the delegates that made EMEC 2011 all it could be.  We're truly looking forward to delivering more in the future at all of our live events.

If you weren't able to attend EMEC and would like to dig in to the experiences, I recommend you first take a look at the video below from the Solution Room that moderator and MPI Board member Ruud Janssen created.  Then take a look at our flickr photo stream, our twitter transcript and members can log on and listen and watch EMEC education sessions

    An exciting day

What an exciting day for the MPI Community, and as your chairman, I’m very proud.  When I consider the thousands of professionals around the world who are unable to experience our community, it excites me all the more that MPI now has a way to reach them. Our strength is in our content and we can extend that knowledge, along with a valuable global network, to them through MPIWeb Connect. This experience allows users to submit their profile information and gain select access to the research, articles and MPI community to drive their success. Most importantly, they become affiliated with the world’s largest association of meeting professionals, where they can build relationships to sustain and grow their business.

Our members retain full access to the body of knowledge provided as part of their investment, with ongoing research in Business Value of Meetings, meeting design and mobile strategies for meetings. With no-cost access to more than 40 planned webinars for the year, and on-demand online content that includes videos from annual conferences, MPI ensures that the education produced is quality.

Last, but certainly not least, today MPI debuts digital tools that address the changing ways in which professionals interact with their community. The MPI mobile website is a streamlined experience that brings the latest and most popular content, along with the chapter listing and event calendar, to the fingertips of smart phone users. We’re also developing apps for iPhone, BlackBerry and yes, even Droid compatible all available by the end of February.

As a focus of my tenure, I am enthusiastic about the knowledge being produced by MPI. It is cutting-edge, timely and it shapes the industry. Through these enhanced connection options, our advances in education will reach even more people, raising the standards of the industry. I welcome the MPIWeb Connect users, enjoy our community.

    Best, Eric Rozenberg

    Final Day at EIBTM

Sadly, EIBTM 2010 has come to a close today. However, Bianca Manteuffel, MPI's Manager of Member Services for the EMEA region has some great news for the Engage blog readers...

    Bianca reports:
I am proud to report that MPI completed EIBTM on a great high, recruiting a grand total of 7 renewing members and a total of 26 new members during the show.

We are looking forward to officially welcoming these meeting professionals to our global community with our onboarding welcome program!

Over the course of the show we also had 8 onsite registrations for the European Meetings and Events Conference in Düsseldorf (two of them becoming a new member at the same time) next year and loads of interested members and non members in the upcoming MPI conferences.

Today also saw the repeat of the Agency Education Programme attracting loads of hosted buyers to the session, and generating traffic to the MPI stand for further information.

The MPI Spain chapter was also successful in attracting lots of guests to the several Spanish speaking educational sessions provided throughout the show. A lot of non-members attended these sessions and MPI Spain was able to show off some of the many things they are doing as a chapter.  MPI was well represented throughout EIBTM 2010 and we are looking forward to another great show in 2011!

    Day 2 at EIBTM

Global business deals are taking place in Barcelona this week and our reporter on the ground, Bianca Manteuffel, Manager of Member Services for MPI is giving us a sneak peak with some help from Maria Jacobsson, Chapter Business Manager for MPI. Both Bianca and Maria hail from the MPI EMEA office in Luxembourg.

    Bianca reports:
As Day 2 draws to a close, MPI staff are celebrating again after another busy and successful day at EIBTM 2010! A total of 12 new members have now joined our global community over the last two days, and six members renewed their membership with MPI and around 50 prospects have showed an interest in learning more about MPI and our global community.

Additionally, we also had two more registrations for the European Meetings & Events Conference made directly at our stand. As part of the EIBTM Agency Hosted Buyer programme, MPI set up a seminar with Roy Sheppard and Peter Fisk with more than 300 participants. The content was remarkable. Great job Miranda!

MPI also announced the European partnership with the Switzerland Convention and Incentive Bureau. An audience of around 150 members joined to celebrate this announcement and network at the MPI Partner reception. After a long day on the tradeshow floor, connecting with over 150 members over a glass of champagne at the MPI Partner reception was a great way to end day two.

Stay tuned for more news from Barcelona soon!
    All the best,
    Bianca

    Maria reports:
On Sunday the 28th of November, 15 European chapter leaders met in Barcelona before the opening of EIBTM. Joyce Dogniez, CMM and I facilitated the day with the focus on chapter business; succession planning process, content delivery modules and member satisfaction. The meeting was extremely successful and the leaders are very satisfied.

During EIBTM, I had an average of 6 chapter leader meetings per day to discuss chapter business and development within the chapters on a local level. This week has been incredible!
