It’s an honor to have the opportunity to lead this highly respected team toward ensuring that Orlando not only remains the vibrant travel brand it is today, but continues to be positioned for prosperity in the decades to come.”

Aguel’s initial responsibilities will include developing strong relationships with Visit Orlando board of directors and staff, member partners, regional business leaders and elected officials, as well as gaining an immediate and deep understanding of the organization’s three-year strategic plan.

Broward Co. CC Gets LEED Gold!

The Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center has been awarded Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance Gold certification--the first convention center in Florida to be LEED certified and one of only three in the nation to achieve LEED Gold certification for an Existing Building.

“This is truly a great day for Broward County as we bring home the gold and celebrate the successful transformation of our Convention Center into a model of sustainability,” said Nicki Grossman, president/CEO of the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Thanks to the dedication of the entire Convention Center team and with the unwavering support of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners and SMG, we have reached an Olympic goal that no other Florida convention center has attained.”

Highlights of the new green features at the center include:

    • A revamped landscape design that reduces irrigation needs by using verdant plants and trees indigenous to South Florida and less water-dependent turf grass, all of which are irrigated by an efficient micro-drip system that uses an estimated 65 percent less water than the previous sprinkler system, contributing to an overall goal of reducing the Convention Center's water usage for irrigation from 10 million gallons annually to less than 5 million.
    • A retrofit of the older, less energy-efficient lighting with a combination of new more energy-efficient fluorescents, LEDs, CFLs and induction lighting to reduce both heat and energy, resulting in a savings of 18 percent off the electric bill.
    • A retrofit of all older plumbing fixtures with low-flow kits to reduce water consumption in restrooms, producing a savings in water consumption of more than 45 percent.
    • The replacement of two 19-year-old water-cooled chillers with new, more energy-efficient water-cooled chillers; along with upgrades to the air-handling and ventilation system, including CO2 sensors for enhanced indoor air quality.
    • An upgrade to the building’s energy management system, including temperature and lighting controls, to enhance the comfort of building occupants while maintaining control of energy using systems in the building to achieve high performance.
    • Through staff training and working with clients, the center went from annually recycling a mere 8 percent of its total waste stream to recycling 58 percent of its total waste stream in the past year, including an estimated 150 tons of brochures, wood pallets, cardboard, carpet and padding, clear sheet plastic, plastic table cloths, lamps and bulbs, shrink wrap, twine, landscaping debris and batteries, as well as plastic bottles, glass and cans.
    • The installation of a state-of-the-art, commercial organic waste decomposition machine known as the “Digester,” which turns all organic kitchen waste into “gray water” that is similar to waste water from a sink, which is then recycled at the water treatment plant and returned as potable water.
    • The purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) for off-site renewable wind and hydro energy systems. The Convention Center's most recent green power purchase will help keep 20,722,187 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, which can be equated to planting 85,276 fully-grown trees.
    • To improve indoor/outdoor air quality for building occupants, smoking is no longer permitted within 25 feet of any building opening. No-smoking signage has been placed throughout the Convention Center to alert visitors of this policy and specific designated smoking areas have been provided.
    • A touch-screen kiosk has been installed in the building's main lobby, which allows patrons to view the Convention Center's “real-time” energy savings and learn about the improvements made over the past three years.
    • On the culinary front, SAVOR, the Center's creative team of food and beverage professionals, follows sustainable practices in the kitchen, from energy-efficient food preparation, non-toxic cleaning, recycling, and water conservation to purchasing locally produced food and beverages whenever possible. Donations are made to local food banks when appropriate and all other organic waste is disposed of in the “digester,” which means virtually “zero” organic waste is disposed of in landfills.

A whole lot of green in the Sunshine State!

digitalNOW Association Executive Summit to Offer Live Streaming Content

The annual executive summit digitalNOW—held April 26-28 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida—brings together CEOs and volunteer leaders from some of the most influential professional, non-profit and trade associations in America.

And although attendance is restricted to C-level leaders, this year select associations, including MPI, are partnering with the event to bring members free live streaming of select sessions.

This is a great opportunity for MPI members of all levels to gain valuable insight into what’s on executive’s minds, gain insight into workable solutions and gain a seat at the table by increasing your understanding of the issues your leaders face—and your value as a strategic member of the team.

The broadcast schedule includes the following presenters.

Geoffrey Moore, author and consultant. Typically, the association sector has addressed innovation, governance, functional excellence and strategies as the independent “flavor of the day." Thus, volunteer leaders and executive staff have struggled to develop a cogent strategy for balancing innovation, next generation growth and the existing/traditional organization. Moore will provide a thought-provoking, research-based and integrated approach for associations.

Rita McGrath, professor, Columbia School of Business. “Complex organizations are far more difficult to manage than merely complicated ones,” McGrath writes. “It’s harder to predict what will happen, because complex systems interact in unexpected ways. It’s harder to make sense of things, because the degree of complexity may lie beyond our cognitive limits." McGrath will explore how complexity is manifesting itself in the association sector and what can be done to manage and take advantage of the resulting interdependence and unpredictability.

Steven Rosenbaum, author. Rosenbaum calls curation the “New Magic” of the connected world—fixing the signal to noise problem, and making the world contextual and coherent again. His vision of curation is the subject of his recently released book, Curation Nation. The book engages more than 60 thought leaders and companies to explore and define the power of curation for brands, media and consumers. Rosenbaum will discuss the role of associations as curators and how they can use curation to restore order to a constituency inundated by information overload.

    The New Rules of Engagement

It's #WEC11, and I have no fewer than four event flows to review, three sets of remarks to rehearse, two apps to download and one back to crack. But I’m PUMPED. As I connect to the energy of the banter on the various social networks, I get the digital equivalent a caffeine jolt. The relentless speed and breadth of our industry never ceases to amaze me, as does the constant thirst for information and connections.

It's all part of the new rules of engagement that inspired the redesign of WEC 2011 in Orlando.

At the Sunday OGS, TED-speaker Simon Sinek is going to first make sure we focus on the “WHY” as in “why should you care?" That’s not just an axiom for #WEC11 but for all of us on how we manage our businesses.

One of the key new rules of engagement is what I call “thinking outside the room.” For #WEC11, we’re deploying an armada of mobile and desktop connection platforms aimed at enriching attendee value and also for those members who cannot make it to #WEC11. This includes our mobile apps, which this year also includes a #WEC11 tablet app AND the industry’s first-ever publication app for One+. And for those of our members that cannot make it to fabulous Orlando, you can get the conference experience on your desktop with MPI Live. Our partners at Fusion Productions are working with us to bring you some great #WEC11 content directly to you via the MPIWeb Home Page. While all these will fill up your mind and keep you up-to-date/connected, they’ll also not weigh you down and will reduce our carbon footprint by reducing paper.

Then there is our marketplace experience. Gone is the traditional trade show, replaced with individual hosted buyer appointments and conversations. We weren’t sure how it would resonate. We’re thrilled that it sold out not once, but twice with almost 4,000 appointments scheduled and counting.

There’s also the new formats and networking opportunities. In the spirit of co-creation, our spring Meeting Madness campaign helped guide some key session selection. Flash Point is back and the speakers are already connecting with our attendees in webinars and the like. I predict that the Solution Room is going to be a crowd fave. We rolled it out last February in Dusseldorf, and it was a highlight reel all on its own.

Finally, there’s Orlando. One of the most creative cities on the planet. There’s no better place to seek design inspiration when you’ve got the spirit of Mickey Mouse and Harry Potter everywhere. The host committee is pulling out all the stops to blow us all away.

In closing, reading this…and it's not a complete list…I cannot help but be BLOWN AWAY by what our entire team has delivered. You all ROCK! And that’s probably what’s got me most excited of all.

    Safe travels…have a great #WEC11.

    Walt Disney World Resort's Roots

Some of you readers may be attending our upcoming World Education Congress in Orlando, Florida. While you're there, you may even stay over and visit Disney World. I've thought about doing the same thing, too.

I think it's interesting, and maybe a sign, that one of my favorite magazines decided run a story on the Walt Disney World Resort on its blog. In the piece, Stacy Conradt explains why Disney build the theme park on swampland.

"With an eye on Florida because swampland was cheap there, Walt flew above the state to scout locations on November 22, 1963–the day JFK was assassinated," Conradt wrote. "At one point, he looked down and saw where the under-construction Interstate 4 was going to cross the Florida turnpike and knew he had his location. The crosspoint of two major thoroughfares and the nearby airport would make for easy access to his park."

That Walt, he's crafty one. Read the rest of the story over at Mental Floss and find out how he actually acquired so much land and what you're walking on when you visit.

    Miami Sees Record Visitor Nos.

The Miami-Dade County area saw a record year for visitor numbers in 2010.

According to the local CBS affiliate:

    • Greater Miami and the Beaches hosted a record 12.6 million overnight visitors
    • Tourists spent a record $18.8 Billion on lodging, food, shopping, transportation and entertainment
    • Visitors generated a record $127 million in tourist-related taxes
    • 29% of state sales taxes collected in the county were paid by tourists

Greater air service (MIA added connections with Brazil, Russia and The Netherlands), a major marketing effort (partially funded by BP) and a relatively weak U.S. dollar are being given most of the kudos for the exceptional numbers.

And recession or not, hotel occupancy numbers are up so far this year--11% compared to the same time in 2010.
