    Meliá Hotels Intl. Continues Growth in Asia

    Meliá Hotels International has announced new hotel projects in Asia with the addition of two hotels in the cities of Xi'an in China and Da Nang in Vietnam.

    The Gran Meliá Xi'an Hotel, the second hotel for Meliá in China after the opening of the Gran Meliá Shanghai Hotel in 2009, is located in New Qujiang district in Xi'an, one of the cradles of Chinese civilization, as well as the eastern end of the famous Silk Road. The hotel will open in 2013 and will have 419 guest rooms, two restaurants, a bar, the YHI spa, a convention center and Red Level service, the VIP service at Gran Meliá which includes superior rooms and other exclusive services.

    The Meliá Danang Hotel will open in December 2012 and is located on Non Nuoc beach on the outskirts of Danang, one of the largest cities in southern Vietnam. The hotel will offer 150 guest rooms, a restaurant, a bar, the YHI spa and The Level executive floor.

    "The response of this region to the Meliá experience has been outstanding, and these new hotels will allow us to reinforce the meaning of our brand, our services, our know-how and the reliability we offer in two countries of historical importance in Asia," said Gabriel Escarrer, vice president and CEO of Meliá Hotels International.

    Indiana Debuts Convention Complex

    The 34-story JW Marriott Indianapolis Downtown debuts tomorrow (February 4), completing the Marriott Place development project that occupies seven acres along the west side of downtown Indianapolis.

    The Marriott Place development, totaling 2,248 guest rooms, includes the Courtyard by Marriott Indianapolis Downtown, SpringHill Suites by Marriott Indianapolis Downtown, Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Indianapolis Downtown and the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown. All are connected to the newly renovated and expanded Indiana Convention Center.

    In addition to 54 meeting rooms and 104,000 square feet of event space, the JW Marriott Indianapolis also houses a 40,500-square-foot Grand Ballroom, the largest hotel ballroom in the U.S. Midwest.

    "The Marriott Place Indianapolis hotel complex is an integral component to the city's overall strategic tourism growth," said Michael Browning, chairman of the board for the Indianapolis Convention & Visitors Association. "The Indiana Convention Center's recent expansion, a new airport, new stadium hosting the Super Bowl and now touting the world's largest JW Marriott--Indianapolis has arrived on the national tourism scene and is the envy of destinations across the nation. The city's overall compact convention package continues to attract new customers, with more hotel rooms connected into our convention center via skywalks than any other city in the U.S."

    Five-Star Hotels on Holy Land

    The BBC spoke with Munaf Ali, CEO of Range Hospitality, about building luxury hotels near holy Islamic sites. The company recently opened a property in Karbala in Iraq, and is looking into further developments to capitalize on the wealthy travelers among the 300 to 330 million pilgrims who visit holy sites each year.
