Know Your Rights

Did you know that if your flight in Europe is canceled and you're consequently denied boarding, you could be entitled to compensation between €125 and €600? Did you know that if your luggage is damaged as a result of an accident, you could also be entitled to compensation? That rail and air companies are obliged to provide transparent information on pricing?

Whether your flight is canceled, your hotel is not priced as advertised or your train time has changed, a new smartphone app can help you understand your rights—in 22 different languages. And if you feel that your rights have not been respected, the app also provides information on who to contact in order to complain. The app currently covers air and rail transport, and will be extended to bus/coach and marine travel in 2013.

During a large-scale emergency, like the Icelandic volcanic ash crisis in 2010, the application will also display travel information and advice from the European Commission. The app is part of the commission’s Your Passenger Rights at Hand campaign: Access the app here:

Hi Jessie, Yes great point and glad to see this covered. The EU has standardized the regulations and it gives some leverage back to the passengers. Recently experienced the workings myself and must say it is now accessible and easy to do.

PS: Can you send the link or add in the text as the QR codes normally don't work very well from a screen scan (lack of resolution and clarity) often you need to print out the piece first which is not so practical.

    Best regards, Ruud Janssen

Oh, Ruud! Thank you. It would take an Act of Congress (literally) to get something like this passed in the U.S. The linky to the Android app is here, or you can search the Apple App Store or Google Play for Your Passenger Rights.
