    Value to the max

I was on the phone with a member the other day discussing ways they could get the most out of their MPI membership. Then I started thinking, it is important to continue the conversation with the member community on how to best utilize all the resources that come with being a member of MPI. Not only that, we continue to add new resources all the time. So the member resources conversation, based on why one joined MPI, is always changing.

I thought I’d take advantage of this platform to share my thoughts on the latest and greatest on how members can make the most of their MPI investment.

Here are some valuable resources available with MPI membership:

    • My MPI” has just been added to the www.mpiweb.org website. This is an online resource to connect, share and discuss.  This is where the exchange of ideas, documents and easy access to professional peers all come together in a private setting created just for MPI members.
    • MPI has also recently made visual enhancements to www.mpiweb.org, making it easier to connect to content, people and resources.
    • Career Connections by MPI gives members an exclusive 15-day advance peek at new industry jobs. Plus, members always save by being able to post their open positions for free—a $225 savings, in fact.
    • Online education is available 24/7/365 on your desktop or your mobile devices through MPI’s Professional Development On Demand, with over 200 CIC-IS approved contact hours that are CMP qualified and available free for MPI members.
    • MPI Foundation’s Thought Leadership program delivers cutting-edge industry knowledge that keeps members ahead of their game in a fast paced industry whirling with change.
    • Sustainable Event Measurement Tool and CultureActive© tool on www.mpiweb.org provide assistance to members so they can meet the challenges of going Green and doing business internationally.
    • MPI’s award-winning One+ magazine gives members industry news and opinions they need to be on top of their profession.
    • MPI’s annual World Education Congress connects members to relationships, knowledge and ideas that elevate their performance. From the hosted-buyer program to Market Square, MPI is bringing new ways for planners and suppliers to connect.
    • MPI’s Chapters now have access to an educational database that lets them deliver locally proprietary education created to meet the specific needs of MPI members.

These are just a few of the ways to maximize the value of MPI membership. But truly, you get out of an MPI membership what you personally put into it. While the resources above all come with the membership the moment you write the check, the real value awaits until you to jump in and get involved. Go to meetings. Make personal connections that develop into long-term relationships. Join a committee. Vow that at each MPI event you meet someone you do not know.

The value of MPI is expressed in the personal stories of MPI members across its 40-year history. There is now a special place where they are kept. Visit www.mpiweb.org/stories to learn more. If you are a member, share your story too. If you are not a member of MPI, join and start your story today.

Please look back to here from time to time as I continue the conversation on maximizing your MPI return on investment.

    MPI @ AIBTM Recap

In the lead up to the inaugural AIBTM exhibition in Baltimore, MPI headquarters were full of anticipation for the reveal of Business Value of Meetings research. At the end of three days, our expectations were met and exceeded by the sheer volume of connections that were made and the feedback from the industry on the results of the groundbreaking study.

The crowd of more than 60 professionals, who included both media and planners eager to find out the latest news on meeting measurement, listened as Bill Voegeli of Association Insights explained the detailed report, how it affects business and the next steps. The buzz on the report, which was available free specially for AIBTM attendees, extended beyond the floor of the Convention Center, as media, bloggers and experts broke down the results and discussed what this means for our industry.

Upcoming deliverables from the BVOM research include webinars (June 30 and July 6) as well as a toolkit for planners and suppliers in September 2011.

While on the exhibit floor, MPI team members Randy Crabtree, Amanda Miller, and Miranda Van Bruck were able to make connections with hundreds of attendees, signing up new members, renewing the connection with previous members and sharing the value of MPI with all. On-site professionals were able to experience Professional Development On Demand, the 24/7 content library where members have unlimited and free access to audio and video from conferences as well as the weekly queue of webinars from some of the top subject matter experts in the industry.

MPI education, Global Training on the Road, brought together a diverse group to learn from the GCMBE III program, part of the education that prepares professionals for industry certification. Ruud Janssen facilitated the program, which included several accredited Global Trainers both in person and via satellite, and the three hours of training were a success.  Not only does the information presented help professionals gain the skills necessary for CMM, but it is based on the recently release Meeting & Business Events Competency Standards, which MPI had a central role in developing.

You can view photos of Randy, Miranda and Amanda with attendees, as well as Ruud's Global Training education group on the MPI Flickr account. Thank you to everyone who attended the BVOM global debut, interacted at the MPI booth and attended the Global Training session!

    Back Like We Never Left

Fellow communicators and all-star editors at sister blog PlusPoint made a very good point to me: Engage has fallen off the blogging wagon! So Theresa Davis and I have rededicated ourselves to making sure we’re finding ways to get the latest news to you on this channel.

So what’s been happening you ask? Quite a bit.

We’ve launched a new portal at mpiweb.org: Professional Development On Demand, a.k.a. PD On Demand. Through this section of the site, we are able to bring more than 130 hours of CEU eligible content, which includes video and audio from events and webinars, which planners can use toward industry certification. We recognized that streamlining this library of information makes visiting the website easier for members who are preparing for the CMP or looking to maintain CEU hours. So if you haven’t gotten a chance to interact with the PD On Demand portal, consider this your introduction and go learn

What else, what else? Oh yeah, the redesigned WEC 2011 experience. It’s kind of a big deal. New rules of engagement in our post-recession industry mean that professionals need brain, face, brand and personal time. We addressed this with the introduction of attendee driven content like Solution Rooms and the Hive and the continuation of the highly successful Hosted Buyer Program. The industry has noticed and responded with a resounding “yes!” to the WEC 2011 experience.

We have more stories to tell; Keep updated through following @MPI on twitter, becoming a fan on facebook and joining the official MPI group on LinkedIn.
