Las Vegas' historic Sahara hotel and casino closed its doors yesterday.
The former Rat Pack favorite has lived for nearly 60 years as one of the most iconic properties on The Strip--the only such remaining post WWII-era hotel and casino.
Before you raise a martini and proclaim, "So long and thanks for all the fish!" note that the story of The Sahara isn't necessarily over.
SBE Entertainment Group CEO Sam Nazarian closed the doors yesterday with a cryptic comment, "Be back soon! Thanks for 59 years!" SBE has owned and operated the property since 2007.
Nazarian has left open the idea that The Sahara could be re-opened in the future, but right now it's just simply not financially viable. The Strip's north end, according to Nazarian, is the future of Vegas. With that assumption, this historic closing news may one day give way to another item: The Sahara's historic re-opening.
