Angeles Moreno, an experienced meeting professional with a track record of industry engagement, has joined the global staff of Meeting Professionals International as a senior consultant to help support the association’s initiatives in Europe.
Moreno, who has served in numerous volunteer leadership capacities for MPI, will join the organization as strategic development, senior advisor in Europe, beginning March 1. The appointment was announced by Paul Van Deventer, CEO and president of MPI, during the European Meetings and Events Conference (EMEC) in The Hague.
“I once said these words on stage: ‘I'm a privileged professional,’” Moreno said Monday. “Today I repeat myself together with the words, ‘thank you.’
“Thank you to MPI and to the European community for the trust you have placed in me today to continue contributing to the future of the association. After six years of volunteering roles in different positions, I am happy to accept this new challenge.”
Moreno has been actively engaged with MPI, most recently serving as chair of the organization’s European Advisory Council in 2018. She was president of the Iberian Chapter from May 2016 through July 2018, and helped organize a successful EMEC in Granada, Spain, in 2017.
In her new role, Moreno will help build new relationships and strengthen existing partnerships for MPI, the world’s largest association for meeting and event professionals.
“MPI Europe has a clear mission: to increase its presence and consolidate its prestige in Europe,” she said. “To do this, it is important to build the future based on the legacy our past leaders have left us to ensure the sustainability of MPI.
Darren Temple, chief operations officer for MPI, said Moreno’s appointment is a coup for the organization.
“Angeles brings a comprehensive and unique perspective to our European strategy,” he said. “She is a past chapter leader, EMEC host, EAC chair and passionate advocate for MPI. In addition, she has the relationships and experience to grow our community and partnerships.”
Paul Van Deventer, president and CEO of MPI, said the association is determined to grow its presence in Europe following initiatives designed to strengthen the organization’s core financial and strategic plans.
He said MPI will be investing more resources in Europe in three key areas: branding, human resources and content. The appointment of Moreno addresses an increase in human resources in Europe. She will work closely with Federico Toja, who is also based in Europe. Toja, director of chapter business in Europe, has been with MPI more than five years.
“We’re in a great place to start,” Van Deventer told the European chapter leaders during EMEC. “We hope to see growth over the next five years and reinvigorate our investments in Europe. We’re going to support that investment where (chapter leaders) think it should go.”
Moreno said her plans include a continued focus on membership growth, chapter stability and the implementation of event strategies that consistently provide education for all professionals, networking and increased business development opportunities for the European MPI community.
She said it will be critical for the leadership team to work on the projects and challenges of engaging with the European community.
“We need to reconnect the MPI and European strategy with the national level, creating connections between countries,” she said. “By doing this, we will be more effective in improving MPI’s value proposition and positioning it within Europe.
“Every day we have to look to the future, thinking that we want to be more and better. MPI needs a stronger presence in Europe and for that we need the best leaders.”
Moreno will continue in her role as managing partner for the Creative dots, a consultative group focused on supporting the events sector.
