Congratulations on your decision to join the elite global community of professionals on the pathway towards their CMP designation!

You may have heard about the exciting change for our organization and the CMP credential. Following a rigorous process, it became apparent that in order to be a true representative of our evolving industry our organization needed to evolve for the future. A name change to include ‘events’ would better reflect the organizations we represent and you – the meeting and event professionals we serve. The Convention Industry Council is now the Events Industry Council.

The CMP credential remains recognized globally as the badge of excellence in the meeting, convention, exhibition, and event industry. The Certified Meeting Professional – powered by the Events Industry Council – has a new look to increase consumer recognition of the CMP and its association with the Events Industry Council, thereby increasing the reach and credibility of the CMP mark.

The Power of CMP

The CMP designation can open the door to more and better opportunities in the events industry. Not only are employers seeking CMP certified individuals, achieving your CMP gives you additional earning potential.

Helpful Exam Day Hints

  • You must bring a valid, unexpired government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license. The photo identification must exactly the name under which you registered.
  • Candidates are provided with a locker key and instructed to leave all personal belongings, including notes and electronic devices, in their assigned locker.
  • No food and drink (including water) are permitted in the exam room. All exam sites provide access to water fountains located outside of the exam room.
  • Questions can be marked and returned to at a later point in the exam. Questions can be marked for review and an answer can be changed, provided that time permits. Be sure to answer all questions, as only answered questions are scored.
  • Read the question thoroughly and understand what it is asking. Statistically, your first answer is more likely to be the correct one. So don’t second guess yourself.
  • Remember that there is no “guessing penalty” on the CMP exam, so it’s always best to take an educated guess if you are uncertain of the answer. Eliminate the answers you know are incorrect and take an educated guess from among the remaining choices.

Remember to relax!

FAQs

Q. How do I prepare for the CMP exam?
A. The CMP Examination evaluates the skills and knowledge meeting professionals have gained over the course of working in the field. Candidates must apply their experiences and knowledge along with the materials in the study manuals. Therefore, it is not something for which a candidate can study or prepare for at the last minute. Candidates may prepare for the examination with a careful review of the practice of meeting management, either individually or as part of a study group. The CMP International Standards(CMP–IS) should be used as a study guide and provides the number of questions for each domain and skill.

Q. I am preparing for the exam. Which books do I need?
A. We recommend the following books. Click here to purchase them from our online store.

  • Events Industry Council Manual, 9th Edition
  • Events Industry Council Glossary
  • Professional Meeting Management 6th Edition

Q: When I look at the employment requirements, I’m not sure whether or not my job qualifies. How can I be sure?
A: There are many different ways to gain the experience required to sit for the CMP exam. The definition is broad to account for many, diverse ways our industry has grown. The requirement for work experience is: Work experience should be fullā€time work experience in the meeting, event, exhibition, hospitality and tourism industry. The 36 months does not have to be consecutive but must be within the past five years. Your experience should demonstrate meeting management responsibilities or your role should contribute to the planning, execution, and results of meetings.

Q: What backup documentation should I submit to ensure my virtual education counts towards my hours?
A: You can submit an organizational transcript, certificate, registration confirmation email, receipt of payment, or screenshots of the first and last screen of the event. You will also need to submit a description of the sessions attended.
