MPIRMC Risk Management Program training

Last week’s Risk Management Program led by duty of care expert Brenda Rivers, founder and CEO of Andavo Meetings, Incentives and Consulting, was a day full of interactive training and expert knowledge to learn how to create a risk management strategy for every meeting and event, big and small. With expert First Responders, Paul Frederick, CPP, CLSD, Hospitality Security Advisors, LLC, of the Greater New York area and Commander Nicholas L. Gernon, 8th District Commander, of the New Orleans Police Department, we were given advice on how to assess risk level with venues and know what to do in the first ten minutes of a crisis.

The in-depth training, and case study work of actual crisis scenarios had us all realizing the in-depth work that every planner should be doing to fulfill their duty of care when it comes to their meetings and events for their companies and clients.

“As a planner, I realized that for ourselves and our teams to be prepared in any crisis, we really need to create a full strategy and plan that can help us work with venues, CVB’s and local law enforcement to ensure the safety of all attendees,” said attendee and planner Kimberly Schmitz of Spin Event Management. “This training provided me with the questions to ask, the templates and the process to ensure we create a thorough crisis response plan for our clients.”

The day wrapped up with learning how to recover after a crisis and determining a set of criteria to decide whether to continue with the event or cancel. Of course, every event has its own requirements and much of our evaluations circled back to “depends on the crisis” but overall, we all walked away with a deeper understanding of how important, more than ever, developing a crisis response plan is as a planner.
