CMP Information

CMPs earned on average $8,500 a year more than their colleagues without the designation. In today’s job market, most positions require CMPs so why not give yourself the advantage!

Event planners with the CMP designation stand out in the crowd. The CMP credential is recognized globally as the badge of excellence in the meeting, convention, exhibition, and event industry. The qualifications for certification are based on professional experience, education, and a rigorous exam.

About the CMP Program

The Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) program was launched in 1985 to:
  • Enhance the knowledge and performance of meeting professionals,
  • Promote the status and credibility of the meeting profession, and
  • Advance uniform standards of practice.
Today, the CMP credential is recognized globally as the badge of excellence in the meeting, convention, exhibition, and event industry. The qualifications for certification are based on professional experience, education, and a rigorous exam.

Created by and for Meeting Professionals, the CMP exam was developed and is maintained by meeting professionals from all over the world who volunteer their time to ensure that the program reflects current best practices in the meeting management field.
More than 11,000 meeting professionals in 55 countries hold the CMP designation. This unique community represents every sector of the industry, from corporations and associations to government and institutional organizations.
The CMP program aims to increase the expertise and sophistication of meeting and event professionals in all sectors of the industry by:
  • Identifying a comprehensive body of knowledge in the meetings and events profession
  • Promoting industry standards, practices, and ethics
  • Advancing the art and science of meeting management
  • Increasing the value of Certified Meeting Professionals to their employers
  • Maximizing the value received from the products and services provided by CMPs.

Reporting Clock Hours

There are two ways to report earned clock hours. At live events, you will need to have your badge scanned at the door of each session in order to receive credit and have it automatically applied to your Member Transcript (Please allow 2-3 weeks processing).

On demand courses and webinars will automatically update in your MPI Academy transcript. Please be sure to take the evaluation after each webinar. Afterward, you will be prompted to download your certificate of completion. In the case that MPI is unable to update and sync to your EIC account, you can use the certificate to manually report your hours.

Study Materials

Purchase online from the EIC Store at:

Events Industry Council Manual, 9th Edition
Events Industry Council
http://www.eventscouncil.org/store/publications.aspx

Professional Meeting Management, 6th Edition, edited by Glen C. Ramsborg,Ph.D.
Professional Convention Management Association (www.pcma.org)

Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) Glossary
Convention Industry Council (www.eventscouncil.org)

EIC recommends at least 100 hours of studying before taking the exam. Although the study group is very beneficial, you MUST study on your own as well outside of the class. Testing is based on real life experience so it doesn’t need to be in the book to be on the test.

Test Drive
Prometrics is the company that the CIC administers the CMP test through. They offer an option called Test Drive for folks who would like to scope out the situation before the day of the exam. It might be a good idea if you’re uncomfortable in less-than-familiar environments. https://www.prometric.com/en-us/for-test-takers/prepare-for-test-day/pages/take-a-practice-test.aspx

Flash Card App
Study Blue www.studyblue.com.
It’s also an app for smart phones under the same name.
Users can set up their own flash cards, share, study & review them too.
