Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID) brings together leaders from across the meetings and events industry to showcase the real impact that business meetings, conferences, conventions, incentive travel, trade shows and exhibitions have on people, business and communities. Last year, more than 120 events were held across the globe including Toronto.
The 2019 program is designed for both planner and suppliers featuring a range of hot button topics impacting our industry. A variety of topics will be explored through the lens of event professionals, including, human trafficking, careers in our ever-evolving industry and the effects of newly implemented cannabis legislature.

Meet our Speakers:
Constance Wrigley-Thomas – CAE, CEO of Essentient Association Management & Events, Co-founder & Chair of the Canadian Chapter of the AMC Institute
Constance Wrigley-Thomas, CAE is the owner and CEO of Essentient Association Management & Events and recently celebrated her 29th year working in the not-for-profit sector.
Constance has provided expertise to dozens of national and provincial trade and professional associations, both professionally and as a volunteer and has also mentored many in the profession. Constance is an active member of the Canadian Society of Association Executives and is currently Immediate Past Chair of CSAE Trillium. She is also the co-founder and Chair of the Canadian Chapter of the AMC Institute, the trade association for association management companies, and also sits on their international board.
In 2009 Constance was recognized with the CSAE Trillium Chapter President’s Award in recognition of her significant volunteer contributions and commitment to the association, and in 2016 was inducted into the M+IT Hall of Fame in the Mentor category.
Tania Ferlin – Volunteer, Awareness Advocate and Speaker, Meeting Professionals Against Human Trafficking (MPAHT)
Tania is a passionate and energetic hotel sales professional and human rights advocate. She is a Corporate Group Sales Manager at the Hyatt Regency Toronto, and a dedicated volunteer with Meeting Professionals Against Human Trafficking (MPAHT).
Having graduated from Humber’s Hospitality Management program in 2013, Tania has grown an extremely successful career with many of our industry’s leading hospitality brands. Through her leadership role with MPAHT, she has been spearheading the Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign in our industry since 2017. She has researched the topic in depth by interviewing human trafficking survivors, law enforcement, social workers, and through reading and attending conferences.
She has been a speaker at Humber College, George Brown College, the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario 2018 Annual Summit, and was recently interviewed on CBC radio on her efforts to spread awareness of human trafficking as it relates to the hospitality industry. Tania has presented to over 300 hospitality and meeting professionals to bring attention to this crime that is too often “hidden in plain sight”
Colin J. Bartley, MBA – Program Coordinator, Hospitality - Event Management, Humber College
Colin Bartley has over 25 years of progressive management and leadership experience with both Canadian and global organizations. His career created the opportunity to gain direct experience leading individuals and teams, including coaching and directing, to exceed both individual and team goals. Colin’s experience spans multiple disciplines within the hospitality, tourism, business travel, and corporate payments sectors. Colin has maintained a philosophy of personal growth and development throughout his career, including industry and community involvement. He recently completed his MBA in order to further his formal training and bring more value to his clients. Colin’s goal is to deliver value to clients through continued integration of his industry experience and taking a personalized approach to their success. He is currently a professor at Humber College (Faculty of Business) and is the Program Coordinator for the Event Management Program.
Shannon Bramswell – Program Coordinator, Special Event Planning, Centennial College
Shannon Bramwell is Professor and Program Coordinator of the Special Event Planning diploma program at Centennial College. She also teaches in the one year Event Management graduate certificate program. Shannon enjoys the privilege of sharing her passion and industry experience with students in both the classroom and through student led events.
Prior to her time at Centennial College, Shannon spent over a decade in the event industry specifically dealing with health & safety, and crisis management planning of large scale events. Having been an entrepreneur, she has worked with world-renowned festivals, concerts and sporting events.
Paul Araujo, MBA – Program Coordinator, Special Events Management Diploma, George Brown College
Paul is a professor and coordinator of the Special Event Management Diploma program at George Brown College’s School of Hospitality. It’s a two year program with over 400 full-time students and graduates 200 students every year, making it the largest event management program in Canada. Prior to joining George Brown, Paul has worked in sales, catering, conference services, banquets, front office, and housekeeping with hotel brands such as Westin, Renaissance, Wyndham and Marriott.
Jay Rosenthal – Co-Founder & President, Business of Cannabis
Jay Rosenthal has a 20-year career at the intersection of media, business, politics, and policy — especially as it relates to heavily regulated industries. The Co-Founder and President of Business of Cannabis, Canada’s authoritative source for news and analysis of the cannabis industry, Jay provides context and insight into the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of the Canadian cannabis sector.
A sought-after media commentator on cannabis related issues, Jay has appeared in The Globe and Mail, and on CBC Radio, BNN and Breakfast Television. He is also a contributor to The Huffington Post and Civilized Life.

Dela Kumapley – Events Manager, Lift & Co
Dela Kumapley is Event Manager at Lift & Co. (TSXV:LIFT), a cannabis-focused technology and media company that provides a platform of advertising solutions, events, and data insights. This platform enables cannabis businesses to better understand, and reach cannabis consumers. In her role, Dela manages the Lift & Co. Cannabis Business Conferences and Expos. These events are part of Lift & Co.’s year-round roster of leading events which also includes the Canadian Cannabis Awards, and Retail Tradeshows.
Matt Maurer – Vice-Chair Cannabis Law Group, Partner and Litigator, Torkin Manes LLP
Matt Maurer is a Partner and the Vice-Chair of Torkin Manes LLP's Cannabis Law Group. He is also an accomplished trial and appellate lawyer in the Litigation Group with over a decade of experience advocating on behalf of his business clients.
Matt provides business and regulatory advice to a wide range of cannabis industry stakeholders, including licensed producers, producer applicants, owners of businesses that provide ancillary services to the cannabis industry, entrepreneurs with start-up aspirations and foreign businesses who are looking to enter the Canadian market or enter into partnerships with established Canadian cannabis businesses.

Tony Priolo – VP, Education and Government Relations, Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation
Tony Priolo has worked in education for over 25 years both in Ontario and aboard. He has worked in a post-secondary environment at George Brown College since 2004. He helped develop and implement two Augmented Education programs which are employment focused programs designed for people with a history of mental Illness and/or addiction in partnership with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). During his time as Chair of School Work and College Preparation, Tony had oversight for 10 programs at George Brown College that provide access to college pathways and further programing. As Chair of GBC’s Academic Upgrading and Pre- Programs Tony’s main focus was supporting student success.
During his tenure at George Brown, Tony had the opportunity to work with both Municipal and Provincial Government departments and agencies.
His strong leadership and interpersonal skills have helped him be successful in establishing new partnerships and relationships as well as successfully implementing and overseeing new initiatives.
Jonathan Hiltz - Director of Business Development for Indiva
Jon Hiltz spent two years as an international correspondent for the Weedmaps-owned website Marijuana.com where he covered the emergence of the legal cannabis industry in Canada and around the world. He also wrote and published a book on his experiences called "The Wild West: Canada's Legalization of Marijuana".
Jon is now the Director of Business Development for Indiva, a licensed cannabis producer based in London ON. His book can be purchased here.
