Planning Events Worthy of a President Presented by Franny Starkey

Done well, events are tools used to achieve a greater goal, otherwise it’s just a waste of time and money.  The job of any planner is to conceptualize and execute programs that have an impact on the message being delivered and the people being engaged and activated. After more than a decade planning events in politics for Governors, US Senators and the President and First Lady of the United States, Franny Starkey (former Senior Advisor and Director of Scheduling & Advance for Michelle Obama and current COO of Imprint Group), leads this session and shares the most important lessons she’s learned in her presidential planning career that can be embraced and applied for corporation and association planners across the country.

About the Speaker

Franny ColorFranny Starkey has provided event management, advocacy, political and strategic planning work for corporate, non-profit and political organizations for nearly 20 years. Her work has serviced the needs of two Governors; two U.S. Senators; and the First Lady and President of the United States.

Prior to joining Imprint Group as COO, Starkey served as Director of Special Events & Protocol for the University of Denver where she instituted programs and processes that increased alumni and donor engagement by more than 300 percent through more than 150 events each year. She joined DU after starting and operating her own strategic planning and project management consulting firm, to provide her vast knowledge, experience and contacts for private clients across the country and abroad. Clients included Western Union; the Colorado Legacy Foundation; Obama for America; the Democratic National Convention Committee; the Presidential Inaugural Committee; the Colorado Democratic Party; and the Biennial of the Americas 2013.  She started her company, Starkey Sanguin Projects LLC, after leaving the White House, where Starkey served as Senior Advisor & Director of Scheduling & Advance for the First Lady of the United States.

In her capacity at the White House, Franny designed and implemented trips by the First Lady to more than 20 states and a dozen countries overseeing everything from event design and execution; message look and delivery; transportation & security logistics; and political outreach.  Franny directed the launch of the First Lady’s three signature platforms – Let’s Move!; Joining Forces; and her international agenda focused on youth empowerment and community engagement abroad launched in Haiti and Mexico and later in her groundbreaking trip to Africa in June 2011. Additionally, during her tenure at the White House, Franny oversaw all of the First Lady’s international hosting obligations planning spousal summit programs in Pittsburgh for the 2009 G-20 and in New York City for the 2010 United Nations General Assembly.

Prior to her work at the White House, Franny designed and implemented various events and schedules for numerous political campaigns.  Additionally, in 2008, she served as the Director of the Colorado Convention Center, headquarters for the 2008 Democratic National Convention in her hometown of Denver, Colorado, where she managed more than 50,000 square feet of meeting space, more than 100 events, and the overall logistics, security and transportation needs for the facility during the convention.

Starkey is a Colorado native, she lives in Parker with her husband, Ken Sanguin, and two daughters Willa, 7 years old, and Jaydee, 5 years old.
