Meeting Professionals International’s European Advisory Council met for the first time during the SITE + MPI Global Forum in Rome, setting an initial agenda for its work.

The committee, chaired by Angeles Moreno (MPI Iberian Chapter), conducted an hour-long brainstorm session that included Paul Van Deventer, president and CEO of MPI; staff liaison Federico Toja, MPI’s director of chapter operations, Europe; and other MPI global leaders.

Also present was Miguel Neves, CMP, who is serving a one-year term on MPI’s International Board of Directors and is the liaison between the advisory council and the IBOD.

The committee is tasked with providing recommendations and input with respect to the European MPI community and strategy that will elevate the MPI Global brand within Europe, with a focus on supporting the growth of MPI European membership and chapters, implementation of a focused event strategy and portfolio, consistent delivery of education and networking opportunities within the European community and increased business development opportunities for both global sponsorship and the MPI Foundation.

Committee members include:
• Hector Venegas—MPI Germany Chapter
• Brigitte Boone—MPI Belgium Chapter
• Heidi Hughes—MPI British Columbia Chapter
• Pieter Allaerts—MPI Belgium Chapter
• Giovanna Lucherini—MPI Italia Chapter
• Steen Møller—MPI Denmark Chapter
• Remy Cregut—MPI France-Switzerland Chapter

Venegas, Allaerts and Hughes were not able to attend Sunday.

The council plans to conduct conference calls monthly and meet during major industry events such as IMEX in Frankfurt and the World Education Congress in Indianapolis.

Neves on Friday gave all volunteer leaders attending the European Chapter Leaders Forum a report on work done by the council in 2016. In all, 23 recommendations—10 short-term, 13 long-term—were identified following interviews with nearly every chapter leader.

The recommendations were in the areas of marketing and communication, management, education and events, chapter leader development, development strategy and member engagement.
