Carla Thomas-Carroll, Director of Global Sales with Salamander Hotels and Resorts, recently sat down with one of our newer members. Let’s get to know Candice Franklin and more about Albany – where history and nature flow.

How long have you been with Discover Albany?  I joined the CVB in the summer of 2018. I’m an Albany Native – born and raised – and love my city. I have always been heavily involved in the community so when the Executive Director came to me with the opportunity it was a no brainer. 

Favorite thing about the hospitality industry: I have worked in a few different industries, and I can say positively say that the hospitality industry has been the kindest and most genuine group of individuals I have ever met. Building relationships is my absolute favorite aspect of our industry. From the meeting planners to the association execs to other CVBs across the country, I have yet to meet a person that didn’t have a story to share or a kind word of encouragement. Learning the world of CVBs was different than anything I have done in the past and a serious learning curve. I received the Southern training that we refer to as “baptism by fire.” There was not been a single person I have met that hasn’t been willing to answer my questions, offer an example, or jump on a call to help me work through a situation. Already, I have so many friends that I’ve met along the way. This job just makes my heart so full. 


One thing unique to Albany that you like to share with your clients: This is a pretty difficult question, because Albany has so many unique offerings such as the world’s only RiverQuarium, an environmental education center featuring the “blue hole.” Another great place to visit is Radium Springs Gardens, one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders. The spring pours 70,000 gallons of water a minute into the nearby Flint River. Pictured right. 

However, being a musician myself, my absolute favorite unique part of downtown is Ray Charles Plaza. As the birthplace of Ray, it was only fitting that he be honored here. The park is a large display of sidewalks made from piano keys along the Flint River. The center of the plaza reveals a life-sized sculpture of the pioneer, soul musician seated at a baby grand which rests on a rotating pedestal. While Ray Charles’ favorite melodies play at timed intervals, water flows over the pedestal and spills into a reflection pool at the base. You can grab a piano key bench and enjoy the “concert.” The best time to visit is in the evening so you can experience the light display for the full effect. Pictured left. 

An interesting fact about you: I have a love for Rhinoceros that knows no bounds. I fell in love with Dubya and Sam, two South African Black Rhinos, at the Chehaw Zoo and became involved with a few conservation organizations. I volunteer with the keepers to help the rhinos paint and sell the paintings to raise money for Dubya and Sam in support of the International Rhino Foundation.
